Wheelie Bin Storage Ideas for Irish Homes

With general waste, recycling and food or garden waste collections, most Irish homes now have two or three wheelie bins. They're essential – but lined up along the front of the house or the side of the driveway, they're rarely a good look.

Here's how to tidy them away, and what to look for if you're thinking about a bin store.

1. Decide where your bins should live

The best spot is usually close to where you take them out for collection, but out of the main view from the road and your front windows. Think about:

  • How far you'll wheel the bins on collection day
  • Whether the area is level and flat (important for any bin store)
  • Access for opening lids and getting bins in and out easily

2. Count your bins – and check their size

Most household wheelie bins in Ireland are the standard 240-litre size. Count how many you have (and whether you might add another in future) before choosing a 2-bin or 3-bin store.

3. Choose a material that lasts

Timber bin stores are common, but in Irish weather they need regular maintenance and can rot or warp over time. Plastic options can fade and look cheap. Galvanised steel with a powder-coated finish is strong, low-maintenance and keeps its colour.

4. Make it part of your home's design

A bin store is something you'll see every day, so choose one that suits your house. Anthracite grey is a popular match for modern windows, doors and fascias, while white and green options suit other styles.

5. Plan the installation

A bin store needs a level, flat surface – such as paving or a concrete base – to sit properly and keep doors and lids lined up. If your chosen spot is on a slope or loose ground, sort out a level base first.
